solid waste management

Organic waste and excess food are fed to animals on our farm. Waste from the animals is then used as a natural fertilizer for the plants in our greenhouse and it is also a component in building material.

Nothing is actually wasted; all recyclable materials (non-organic waste) are picked up by Hemaya, a local NGO founded by Sherif El Ghamrawy —Basata’s owner, and then taken to the Solid Waste transfer station in Nuweiba, where it’s further sorted and sent for recycling to Cairo.

Sherif started the Solid Waste Management System in Nuweiba in 1997, after the project was agreed upon by the Egyptian Social Fund, and it was fully operational a year later. For more information on the Solid Waste Management and on other projects of the Hemaya NGO, visit the Hemaya Homepage:
