“It was due to Basata that I started the larger recycling project, Hemaya” says Sherif.

Sherif el Ghamrawy, having witnessed the area between Nuweiba and Taba gradually succumbing to pollution, decided that the Sinai’s Red Sea coast needed more than a single protected area in Basata.

On July 1, 1996 he established Hemaya Association for Community Development (Hemaya in Arabic means protection), a non-governmental, non-profit environmental organization.  It was officially registered in the Social Affairs Administration of Southern Sinai in July of 1997 under No. 46/1997.
